Reportage Wedding Photography

” We’re just looking for that modern documentary style reportage wedding photography”
Wow, that’s a lot of words to describe a style.
Lets face it, it’s never been easy to choose a wedding photographer. When I type “Wedding Photographer” into google.co.uk I get a whopping 22 million hits. Some photographers are traditional, some are modern, some specialize in reportage wedding photography, the list is endless. Sometimes I even get a little confused to exactly what type of photographer I am!
Luckily you’ve stumbled onto this page so lets talk about a style I closely associate myself with: reportage wedding photography. According to the almighty wikipedia reportage is the term for an eyewitness genre of journalism or a report of the news.

Early in my photography career I worked at the largest newspaper in Toronto, a lot of the photographers would shoot weddings on the side since we were high in demand. The biggest tip that most of them would tell me is to “shoot it like a news assignment, don’t miss a thing!” So reportage wedding photography is simply the art of documentation. It’s why a lot of former news photographers like myself leave the media to become wedding photojournalists. The pay is definitely better, and the food is far superior!

The biggest thing you should ask yourself is reportage wedding photography is right for you? If you’re a couple looking for the fairytale style images then reportage wedding photography is definitely not the right choice. However, if you’re looking for a bit more of a raw feel and a way to relive the exact moments of your wedding then perhaps reportage is something to consider.
Or you could simplify things and just run away to Vegas…….
